What classes are missing in school?
Someone just asked me this: if school does not teach students enough, what classes would I add? Here's my response.
I tend to think more about the “delivery” of classes more than the content itself. But, just considering content for a moment, here are some of the gaps in my experience of studying business + CS:
anything specific to product management (have never heard it mentioned in any class, ever)
teaching/pedagogy/learning science
a business capstone project course in lower year Commerce so you can apply your learning from various business disciplines to an actual business/side project
non-fiction reading & writing in high school (goal: get students excited to read & write about the world on their own)
logical reasoning (in a more generally interesting way; this is already taught in discrete math and philosophy classes, but it could be made better for a general audience)
long-term, non-linear thinking
I’m sure I could come up with more!
The problem is that people equate content with learning. A course’s name and readings does not on its own infuse students with new ability. Learning is change; school should be optimized for the wholistic evolution of individuals, which requires students to create, not just consume.
